"Ritz"-style crackers

Test date: June 2010

Tester: Michele and husband Marc

Products for this test purchased at Whole Foods, Fred Meyer, and Trader Joe's.

MICHELE'S OPINION: The 365 products and Barbara's were not bad, however they are much more expensive than Ritz brand crackers, which also tasted great. I would personally stay away from the Fred Meyer Zips. Read on for more details on price, nutrition, and taste:

PRICE COMPARISON FOR 16OZ CRACKERS (store first, then brand):
$5.37 Whole Foods Barbara's
$4.00 Whole Foods 365 Organic
$3.00 Whole Foods 365
$2.50 Fred Meyer Ritz
$1.99 Fred Meyer Zips

1. Ritz crackers: These are buttery crackers with a soft crunch.

2. 365 Organic Golden Round Crackers: These have a similar soft crunch as Ritz, but are not buttery. They are more bread-y tasting.

3. 365 Gold Round Crackers: These are crisp crackers that taste salty. They have a little bit of a sunflower seed taste to them, oddly enough. They also have a hint of a butter taste.

4. Barbara's Rite Lite Rounds: These are relatively crisp crackers with a medium salty flavor. These are Marc's favorites.

5. Fred Meyer Zips: These are the mushiest crackers of the bunch and taste like plastic.

NUTRITIONAL NOTES: Most of these products have about 80 calories per 15g serving (about 5 crackers). Barbara's has the lowest calorie count at 60 calories. Barbara's also has the lowest fat at 2g per serving (which is probably why it has the least taste....), while the others have 3.5g to 4g per serving. Surprisingly though, Barbara's has the most salt, at 200g per 15g, while Ritz and the 365 products have the lowest amount of salt per serving at 125-135mg.

TASTE WINNER: No one beats the original Ritz in taste and price. And with one of the lowest salt contents, you can't go wrong!
