Frosted Flakes Cereal

Test date: January 2011

Testers: Michele, husband Marc, and sister Stephanie

All products for this test purchased at Fred Meyer, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods.
MICHELE'S OPINION: Your preference for one of these products really depends on how sweet you like your cereal, but I'm assuming that if you're purchasing something called Frosted Flakes you're probably searching for some sweetness. So stick with Kellogg's or Fred Meyer brand, which are sweeter than both 365 and Trader Joe's, and stay crunchy twice as long in milk as those options.  Read on for more details.....
Price Comparison for one box of frosted flakes (store first, then brand)
$3.89 Fred Meyer Kellogg's
$2.99 Whole Foods 365
$1.99 Trader Joe's brand
$1.67 Fred Meyer brand

1. 365 Frosted Flakes (Only available at Whole Foods): These are the least sweet flakes of the choices and taste most like corn flakes. They are more crunchy than chewy and are relatively thick flakes. When tested in milk, these flakes got slimy (really disgustingly so, actually) after only two minutes.

2. Trader Joe's Frosted Flakes (Only available at Trader Joe's): These flakes are lighter in density than the other products. We can taste the corn in this product but it is still sweeter than 365. These flakes got mushy and chewy after 2 minutes in milk.

3. Kellogg's Frosted Flakes (Purchased at Fred Meyer and available on Amazon Fresh; available widely in grocery stores): This product is light and flaky and really sweet. They are crispy when dry and didn't get mushy until after 4 minutes in milk, which is twice as long as the 365 or Trader Joe's products.

4. Fred Meyer Frosted Flakes (Only available at Fred Meyer): These are relatively small flakes and are the sweetest of the bunch. They are light and flaky when dry and lasted as long as the Kellogg's brand in milk before getting mushy: approximately 4 minutes.

NUTRITIONAL NOTES: (serving size 3/4cup) These products all have three basic ingredients: corn, various forms of sugar, and vitamin additives. They have very similar nutitional values, with approximately 110 calories and no fat per serving. Most of these products also have similar sodium content, around 140 mg per serving. However, the 365 product from Whole Foods differs here, with a whopping 210mg of salt per serving.

TASTE WINNER: Kellogg's or Fred Meyer
