Test Date: April 2012
Tester: Michele
All products purchased at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, QFC (Kroger banner), and Albertsons.
TASTE WINNER: Tillamook for everyday and for that once in a while supertreat, indulge in Liberte; for kids go with Stonyfield
MICHELE'S OPINION: This test had a few surprises. First, I couldn't believe how sweet the kids yogurts tasted. Stonyfield was not as offensive, but Dannimals and Yoplait GoGurt were like eating candy. All of the fun packaging cannot hide the fact that you're giving your kids the opportunity to develop diabetes early in life....waaaay too sweet. GoGurt actually has the highest carbs (read: sugar) of all of the yogurts tested here. Second, I was a bit surprised that Yami tasted so bad. It's been around for many years and I just can't believe that they've continued to make a profit off of whatever it is they put in their single-serving containers. Yuck!

TASTE PROFILES:
Activia: This has a nice, natural-looking pink color and a medium consistency. It has big chunks of strawberries and is relatively sweet.
Albertsons brand: This yogurt is bright pink with a relatively runny consistency. It tastes like pink cough medicine. In other words, it has a strong berry flavor with an aftertaste of acidic medicine.
Brown Cow: This is a runny yogurt with bits of berry and what look like milk cultures in it. Very, very milky taste with little berry flavor.
Cascade Fresh: This product is light in color and has a relatively runny consistency. The first taste is a bite of sour milk (not like it's gone bad, just not sweet) with a background of berries. If you like a relatively sour yogurt this one's for you.
Dannon Danimals: This yogurt is a dark color and tastes like a strawberry Jolly Rancher. Really, no joke. It is super sweet and has a medium thickness.
Liberte: This product is almost white in color and very dense, like a mousse. It also tastes, well, like mousse. It is supremely rich and creamy with a light strawberry flavor. A very decadent treat, but with 12 grams of fat per serving, I'd make sure to keep it just that: an occasional treat.
Stonyfield: This product is very light in color and has granules of something, maybe real strawberries? It has a pudding-like consistency. The taste is a bit more milky than strawberry. It has a very light flavor.
Tillamook: This has a light pink color, and a pretty dense consistency. It is rich and creamy with a light strawberry taste. It's a very nice, relatively sweet treat.
Trader Joe's Organic Lowfat: This yogurt is very loose in consistency and has a medium pink color. It tastes like plastic.
Trader Joe's Lowfat Prestirred: This yogurt is a dull white color and a jelly/jam-like consistency. It has a nice smooth feel on your tongue but not a burst of flavor. It is not as sweet as the other options.
Wallaby: This is a relatively runny yogurt with a medium color. It is the thinnest I've tasted and has no flavor.
Yami: This product has a loose consistency, light pink color and bits of stawberry in it. The taste, wow, the taste is indescribable. It's like scraping the inside of the
plastic yogurt container after all of the yogurt is gone, so you get that hint of what the product was but mostly just the plastic part. Yuck.
Yoplait Kids: This product is very pink in color with a jellyish consistency. The taste is big on strawberries, but also on processed aftertaste.
Yoplait GoGurt: This yogurt is neon pink and has a jellyish consistency. It smells like the bubblegum floride you get at the dentists office, and well, tastes like it too! Really - almost identical. Wow that brings back memories...
Yoplait Original: This yogurt has a nice pink color and a loose consistency. It is not rich at all but has a nice strawberry flavor, with an unfortunate aftertaste of chemicals.
