Baby Dill Pickles

UPDATE COMING SOON-MORE PRODUCTS, PHOTOS, ETC!

Test date: May 2010

Tester: Michele and husband Marc

Product for this test purchased at Fred Meyer and QFC.

MICHELE'S OPINION: Frankly I was surprised that none of these options were very crunchy. That's what I like best about pickles, that they have a great crunch to them (like the huge half-dills that you get at a jewish deli - delicous!). Maybe after they've been in the fridge for a bit that will change; I did the test before they'd been opened so they were all at room temperature. Read on for more details on price, nutrition, and the taste winner:

PRICE COMPARISON FOR 24OZ OF PICKLES:
$3.99 Private Selection Mild
$3.99 Private Selection with Garlic
$2.50 Farman's
$2.50 Nalley

1. Farman's Home Style Baby Dills: This product has a good vinegar flavor, but is not very crunchy.

2. Nalley Baby Dill Wholes: This product packs more of a dill punch than Farman's. However, the consistency is slightly rubbery and, Marc says, "squeakier" between your teeth than Farman's.

3. Private Selection Baby Mild Dill Pickles: This option is relatively crunchy but has very little flavor.

4. Private Selection Baby Baby Dill with Garlic Pickles: This product has a similar crunch to the other Private Selection option, but a very smoky flavor. I don't taste much garlic as the label states, just a powerful smoky flavor that lingers in your mouth.

NUTRITIONAL NOTES: Both of the Private Selection products state that they have five calories per 28g, while Farman's and Nalley state zero calories per 28g (however, the labels are quite confusing, because Private Selection states that 28g is about two pickles, while Farman's and Nalley say that's about one pickle - they all look the same size to us). In terms of salt, practially the only ingredient in these products besides the actual cucumber and vinegar, the Private Selection Mild Dill has the most, with 350mg per 28g, while the other three range from 260-290mg per serving.

TASTE WINNER: Nalley has the most original dill flavor of the group.
