Original BBQ Sauce

UPDATE COMING SOON - MORE PRODUCTS, PHOTOS, ETC!

Test date: May 2010

Tester: Michele and husband Marc
Products for this test purchased at Fred Meyer.

MICHELE'S OPINION: This was a really hard test, because there is something good and bad about each of these sauces. Also, it really comes down to what type of sauce you prefer - sweet, spicy, smokey, etc. I think in the future I'll purchase Jack Daniel's again, because that's the taste I prefer. But there really is no clear winner in this test. Read on for more details on price, nutrition, and taste:

PRICE COMPARISON FOR 18-19OZ OF SAUCE:
$2.05 Bull's-Eye Original
$2.00 KC Masterpiece Original
$1.60 Sweet Baby Ray's
$1.50 Jack Daniel's Original No. 7
$1.25 Kraft Origional

1. Jack Daniel's Original No. 7 Recipe bbq sauce: This sauce has a cool meaty bbq flavor and does not taste too salty. It also has a fairly creamy texture. In our opinion this is the second sweetest product after Bull's-Eye. Marc says he can taste some whiskey.

2. Kraft Original bbq sauce: This product has a smoky flavor, and overall is a pretty straightforward sauce. But we both agree that it is a little fake tasting.

3. KC Masterpiece Original bbq sauce: This sauce is relatively spicy compared to the others, and there is a first taste of dill/tomato/onion that hits our tongues pretty strongly.

4. Bull's-Eye Original bbq sauce: This sauce is the sweetest of the bunch but is also spicy.

5. Sweet Baby Ray's Award Winning bbq sauce: This is a very peppery sauce and the most spicy of the group. But still has some sugaryness to it that stays on your tongue.

NUTRITIONAL NOTES: Sweet Baby Ray's seems like the richest sauce from a nutritional standpoint with the most calories (70 per 2TB, compared to 50-60 for the other products) and carbohydrates (17g per 2TB, compared to 12g to 15g for the other products). It is also one of two of these products whose first ingredient is high fructose corn syrup instead of tomato puree or concentrate (the other corn syrup-heavy product is Kraft). However, the Sweet Baby Ray's prduct has one of the lower saltiest contents, at 290mg per 2TB. The saltiest products are Kraft with 450mg per 2TB and Bull's-Eye wth 370mg per 2TB.

TASTE WINNER: Very hard decision, but I would say Jack Daniels or Bull's-Eye.
